Well after two months of replacing or repairing common issues with the GL1500 it's registered, insured, and on the road. Playing with tire pressure and shock pressures to find what works best. I do however find when I'm riding two up, were slightly above average weight wise, that I get a squirrelly feeling and bike tracks like a slithering snake on highway acceleration. Also get a very slight surge on idle at times and feel the response isn't as snappy as I'm used to from other carbureted bikes. All of which are something's to look into over the winter. But for now I'm logging miles and taking notes.

What tire pressures are you running? Motorcycle tire or car tire? On the 1500 mc tires you should run 40 to 42 in both tires. Especially riding 2 up. I run 40 in front and 42 in rear.

I'm running what the sticker says for max load, 36 front and 41 rear. The front is a shinko bias and the rear is a shinko radial. I'm not looking for the dreaded tire debate these are just what I got to get the 15 year old dunlop rubber off the bike. Tried to research tires but opinions were all over the place.

Tire pressure is not to save money. It is to keep the tires from wallowing and scolloping (cupping if you prefer). Especially on 900lb. gl1500s. Tire pressure recomendations on 30+ year old bikes have "nothing" to do with modern mc tires.

Just noticed your rear is a radial. Just might be your problem.

I would try increasing the rear tire pressure a few PSI as well as increasing the rear air shock pressure.
Some say running a mix of bias and radial causes issues, but I have never noticed an issue with it.
What pressure are you running your rear shock at? What about the front? What weight are we talking about (you alone and with passanger)

I am 350 lbs alone and have about 10 lbs of stuff in my bike at all times (emergency kit, battery jumper, water and such), and when my daughter (180 lbs) gets on, if I leave the rear shock pressure the same (set at 45 PSI when alone), I can tell a difference.
If I think about it, I bump it up to 50 PSI with her on it. If I am just doing highway with her, 45 PSI is fine, but if we are doing curvy roads, 45 PSI is a bit squirrelly. If I get real aggressive when riding alone, I will bump it up to 55 PSI.
I have Progressive springs in my front, so no pressure in them (which is what it is supposed to be). Max if stock springs is 5 PSI.
I run the rear tire @ 42 PSI all the time, front is @ 38 PSI. I am running Dunlop E-4 front and rear right now.

I'm 280 and the wife is 170. Currently running 44psi in the rear and 5psi in the stock front. Over time I'm sure I'll figure it out, just was wondering if anyone had that squirrelly feeling on acceleration like I had.

Your post says 5 lbs in the front. I suspect you mean 35lbs. Not high enough.
Raise the pressure up to 40lbs and see if there is a difference. What do you have to lose. I still think your problem is with the radial rear tire.

Well some interesting findings. Like a small counteract balancing bead stuck inside the spring action of my front tire valve. It was slow enough to make a difference in handling but not noticeably visual. Front tire is at 40psi, rear tire is at 42psi, front shock I kept at 5psi, and rear shock I set at 45psi. Riding two up on Sunday checking out the fall foliage in the historic towns of north west NJ. Found the ride noticably improved and feel I'm headed in the right direction. Next is to tackle the slight surging at idle and throttle response.

You know...now that you mention that, I used to get Dynabeads stuck in my tire valves ALL THE TIME. I can't say I remember it happening even once with Counteract beads.
