97 GL 1500 engine noise/rough running on start up

Post by 97serider »

On a recent trip to Vermont bike ran well. Didn't ride the next day, but went to move the bike that night due to rain expected. Upon start up it almost caught then spit when I released the starter button. Thought I over choked it, so I backed the choke off and it started but didn't sound right, so I turned it off and let it sit five minutes. I restarted it, still sounded crappy but I let it run and it smoothed out enough to move it. Next day I started it and same thing so I trailered it home. Since then I pulled the plugs ,which were brand new, looked ok, I rebuilt the petcock, which looked ok, and replaced the battery just because it was six years old(Yuasa agm) with a new agm one. Bike started and ran normal on a test drive around the block but at idle I detect a noise on the left side and can definitely feel something if you put your hand on the valve cover, you don't notice it when you throttle up. Bike idle is low and needs to be adjusted. Not sure where to go from here, bike has 80k,well maintained, carbs have not been rebuilt yet. Any ideas appreciated, at this point I don't want to make anything worse. Thanks

Is it possible that there is moisture in the fuel from your recent ride? Put in a fuel additive that will absorb the water. Maybe some Technron, Gumout, Heet or Seafoam. Basically, I would try to eliminate the fuel as the source of the issue.

If by spit you mean a slight back fire, I had the same problem about a month ago. I finally got to look at it last weekend. I replaced the screw on the right side intake (the one you use to balance the carbs) with a barbed fitting. Then i put a rubber cap on the barb to seal it but make it easy to remove. Well the backfire caused the rubber cap to come off. You might have blown off a vacuum hose somewhere or blown a hole in one. Not fun to look at hoses on a wing. Good luck.

It is possible that it's a fuel problem, we filled up right after checking in at the hotel and problem showed up the next day. I did put some stabil 360 in when I got the bike home and some seafoam after that. I ran it around the block and it seemed better. I think I will take that fuel out and put fresh fuel back in. My buddy fueled at the same place but he always does premium.

Agree with checking for water in the fuel first. Then it could be a vacuum line. I had something similar on my 88. It ended up being a cracked vacuum line on the left intake when you are sitting on the bike. It was cracked at the barb. Just cut off the cracked section, slid the hose back on, and problem solved. I replaced all the vacuum lines that winter. Some of them were getting hard. If you do this, remember, they are metric hose.

Update on the bike, I drained out most of the fuel, put fresh gas with Stabil, and checked the spark plug cap connections. Bike fired up, ran normal,so I let it run for fifteen minutes and then parked it for the winter. Thanks for the input gentlemen.
