what car tire size to put on my 1993 GL1500A?
Hello,
I am looking for Darksider riders, and seeing what size car tires you have on your 1993 Goldwings? I just bought this motorcycle and love it but want to change out the rear to a car tire. Now, just to let you all know this will be my 3rd motorcycle with a car tire but wanted to find out what other GL 1500 riders recommend.
Thank you for your time
Robert

Re: what car tire size to put on my 1993 GL1500A?
I cannot recommend a car tire on the 1500,
#1, because of the suspension play the 2 sided swingarm has. I ran 2 different CT on my 99, first on my SE and then on my replacement 99 Aspencade. Both had a serious wobble at 80mph and above, that went away putting a mc tire back on.
#2, the correct size you need would be a 175/75-16 to which there is no longer a ct available in.
#3, The swingarm is not wide enough at the driveshaft tube to the tire clearance to put on a wider tire.
The 1500 is not a good choice to ds on.
Get a GL1800 if you want to darkside. It has a single sided swingarm and the handling is far superior for a ct. I'm on my 5th runflat ct on my 08 1800 that I replaced the 1500 with. 130,000 miles in the past 7.5 years ds.

I have been running car tires on my 1500 for years, as a matter of fact I have run them on both of my 1500 the 88 I had first and now the 97 SE
I don't think you can get the run flat anymore but there are a couple that work just fine. I run the Good Year Assurance 175 60R16 on mine, it has a lower profile so you run a little higher RPM at speed but I have a sidecar so the added low end torque I gain is welcomed, but I ran them for years before I added the sidecar and was always happy with the performance. Your results may vary

A sidecar handling is totally different than a 2 wheeler.aj1500 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 8:16 amI have been running car tires on my 1500 for years, as a matter of fact I have run them on both of my 1500 the 88 I had first and now the 97 SE

Many of us have been running auto tires on our GL1500 for many years with no issues at all, myself included.
The go-to tire used to be the Austone Taxi Tire.
That tire is no longer available in the US, so people have been looking at alternatives, which you can read about here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=55413

Re: what car tire size to put on my 1993 GL1500A?
I have decided to go with the GOODYEAR ASSURANCE "FUEL MAX" 175/60R-16
Price was $146.00, better than the Dunlop E4 for $226.00 dollars.
I will submit a report once the shop has it on and I have put a few miles on her...
Thank you all for your support and knowledge!
Here is a good link for tire comparisons

I am currently running a radar argonite 175/75-16 tire on my 89 wing they have discontinued it now and wondered if anyone had used a 185/75-16 before I can get those for about 90 bucks just wanted to find out before I bought it and could not use it..thanks

Re: what car tire size to put on my 1993 GL1500A?
It appears from research and what people run on the 1500 is the size I am using in my post above, any larger and it will not fit or it will rub, either or... but the tire I chose seems to fit well, the Honda Shop is putting it on for me now and should have it back in a few days. Also having the timing belts changed, plugs and a once overall on the new bike I bought. Plus I bought about 600 dollars worth of chrome to go on her plug the radio plug I bought here also. so I can cut new holes for my new radio... so much work but fun. Just did all of the relays I bought from our admin so part by part it is almost ready for prime time!!!!

Not much out there in the 185/75-16.cycledoc2016 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 9:44 pmI am currently running a radar argonite 175/75-16 tire on my 89 wing they have discontinued it now and wondered if anyone had used a 185/75-16 before I can get those for about 90 bucks just wanted to find out before I bought it and could not use it..thanks
If you do find one you'd best do your homework on width and height as there isn't any play in height nor in width because of the driveshaft tube. I ran one 195/60-16 and it rubbed on the driveshaft tube. The 175/75-16 is the ideal size and even so because of the width, there is some rub on the front of the inner fender, which you can wire tie forward to eliminate the rub.

Re: what car tire size to put on my 1993 GL1500A?
I have a 175/75-16 tire mounted on a spare rim for my gl1800.
yes, it is two sizes smaller than the 195, but I want the bike closer to the ground, and it will help correct for the 6 mph Speedometer error at 70 mph.
Not sure how it is going to effect my ability to put the bike up on the Center Stand, I have to guess it will be at least 50 lbs heavier for me to lift.???

The 175/75-16 is @ the same mounted height as the stock mc tire as the 1500 uses 160/80-16(which is what this thread is on).
I haven't put a 175/75-16 ct up next to a 1800 180/60-16 mounted tire to compare mounted heights to them. If it's shorter then put a board the thickness difference under the tire to get it on the centerstand, and a speedo healer for the speedometer for your 1800.

Re: what car tire size to put on my 1993 GL1500A?
I JUST (5 min ago) ordered the Maxxis 175/r16 tire. It is a 175/80/16 and is the replacement to the Austone Taxi Tire. I chose to go with that vs something with a lower profile. I looked at a LOT of tires and could find very little in the US narrow enough with a taller profile.
