Cruise control stopped working

Post by Elmobile »

Since I own this bike, 1990 GL1500 SE, about 4 years now; The cruise control has been working faithfully, especially after readjusting the cable...
On my last run of the year, it is set aside for the winter, the cruise control stopped working! All seems fine: ON/OFF light comes on and off, the set light comes on as well and off for all input ( Brakes, clutch and throttle) BUT no speed regulation.
My first tough was that a vacuum hose came off but the engine is running fine so it would have to the control valve in the "ECU" or the actuator itself...
Then I remember that as a rule I never use my reverse except that I did used it to leave my friend's driveway before this last drive home.
The reverse itself is working fine (so is the reverse light) and I went up and down with the lever a few time.

So my question is: would the reverse switch in the gear box keep my cruise control from operating?

I have not removed any panel yet to check the actuator or the cruise control "ECU" yet. It will be my first check with my vacuum pump.
Just seeking advices as to what else to check especially if there is an electrical link...
Cheers.

The lever switches are always the first reaction on a GL1500 CC not holding but the CRUISE SET light seems to be working perfectly so not that.

You said you adjusted the cable. When was this done? Was that to help take the "slack" out to reduce the engage time after setting the CC?

My first thought was to relook at your most recent work and check that the cable and linkages are all back in the right places.

Thanks for the reply,
Correct. I just adjusted the slack of the cable... The lazy way ;) !
It was done 2 winters ago and I have put over 7500kms this summer alone using the cruise extensively. No work what so ever during that time.
The bike is away for the winter now. I will have to take the panels out and see what going on under.
I was just wondering if there was a link between reverse and cruise as it happen just after using the reverse. I never use it as a rule. Way too slow and with the sidecar no balance issue  Right!

That's interesting. I'm the exact opposite.
I use my reverse a lot, but I never use the cruise control.

I rarely use either reverse or cruise.... I'll use the cruise extensively if on a trip but most of my driving is around the city. I engage it once in a while in the city just to confirm it still works though. :D

I don't think any of the switches or sensors in the reverse system would prevent the cruise from working. They can prevent the starter, though.

I had the same symptoms after a mechanic had been working on my carbs - all the lights worked as expected, but the CC never grabbed the throttle. Turned out to be the vacuum line going to the cruise control valve - when the mechanic replaced the air filter housing that vacuum line got pinched so no vacuum was getting to the control valve. I moved the vacuum line out from that bolt and everything works great now!

Alan, how TIGHT our Wings are to get into seemingly zero space, to which we can't see 'X', it seems a wonder more hoses or wires aren't pinched. After a while I've learned when I do 'X', I'll then pull/push movable items nearby as a check before moving on.

Scary thought...
Someday everything on our bikes will be wireless. I hope we won't have to pre-say... "SIRI, do an emergency stop please."
