Breather box

Post by rebel1955 »

I have a question. What is the nipple in the front right corner of the lower air filter box? It connects to the hose that everyone has a hard time installing. Possibly a PCV valve? Thanks

It goes to the pair valve which is an emissions thing having to do with the intake air shot air system.

Not sure of all the details of how it works though.

I was having a heck of a time installing mine till I used some long hose pliers (the middle size one) from this kit from Harbor Freight

If it’s not connected the motor will idle rough due to intake vacuum. There is also a notable difference in idle sound. Almost like a diesel sound. Curious to know what others used to get the pinch clamp in place.

That pipe and the hose underneath does not carry intake manifold vacuum and has no affect on carburetor settings. It provides filtered fresh air for use in the PAIR system which controls emissions and also the Shot air system which aids driveability concerns. The air for those systems needs to be clean as it will pass through various valves opening and closing when needed. The PAIR portion injects air into the cylinder head exhaust valve passageway by way of scavenging from the exhaust to promote the more complete burning of any unburned fuel after the combustion process is complete. The Shot air system is used to adjust the decel compensation driveability concern of the 1500 engine as described here. You will be Okay with that top portion pipe that is inside air box broken off.
