LED brake lights....ANOTHER problem!!

Post by offcenter »

On my '99 GL-1500, I installed four 1157 LEDs (from Superbrightleds.com), that's two in the trunk and one each in the saddlebags, total four tail/brake lights.
(https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... 2625/5698/)
When I turn on the key, all four come on as tail lights. Good.
When I hit the brake, all four get BRIGHT as brake lights should. Good again.
When I release the brake, all four go out completely and DO NOT return to tail light function!!
Damn!
But, if I replace one of the LEDs with the old incandescent bulb, that one bulb WILL return to
tail light function. The three LEDs do not, same as before.
What the hey?
What am I missing here, guys?

I got to tell you, I have not seen that before. I think that if I were you I would contact the Super Bright LED's and tell them what you are experiencing.

I have used several types of LED's in my '98 GL1500 brake light sockets and they have all worked like they should.
I bought some from Wal Mart, Ebay and Amazon.
I wanted something more attention getting so I went to flashing LED's that will flash three times and then go steady. I have these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1157-Red-LED-S ... Sw1SJbgHZG in the GL1500.

I have similar 7443 bulbs in the GL1800.

Time to bust out a meter and check for power and ground. Strange light behavior can often be traced to a bad grounds, with some things back feeding through others. LEDs draw so little power that they will not punch through dirty grounds the way incandescent bulbs can.

MikeB, I just ordered some of those. We'll see if they make a difference.
Rambozo, while I'm waiting, I'll go over all the grounds on the bike to see if that could be the problem.

Thank you, guys.

Yee Ha!! Success!
MikeB, I owe you a beer if we ever meet.
Those flashing bulbs that you recommended work fine!!!
In fact they work GREAT!!!
I now have four brake lights that flash.
So the problem was with the bulbs from Superbright.
Thanks again!
