96 quit running

A friend of mine has a 1996. This morning on his way to work it quit running. The fuel gauge & temp gauge quit working at the same time. The thumb switch on the handle bars is in the run position. It will turn over but not start. Any suggestions on where to start looking for the issue? And are the gauges tied in with the ignition system?

Are the tail lights and license plate light on when the key switch is on? If not, then the first thing I would check are Fuse 8 and Relay 3, those are the ones that supply power for those lights and the gauges, among other things.
