Noise coming from under engine.

Post by bentleyss »

Just changed the oil and took the bike around the block and everything seemed fine. Later on I started to ride up to Home Depot and as I was riding along I heard a noise from seemingly under the engine like a fan or something was slapping or creaking until I slowed down. Then, it all stopped and I pulled over to check. Did not see anything under the bike and rode home. Brought it into the garage and jacked it up a little and could not see anything. Now the "Wing" does have a sidecar attatched. I lubed all the connection points and checked them. Checked the oil and checked tires. Nothing. I thought maybe one of the sidecar points might be the cause but they all look good and tight and they don't rotate anyway. Any thoughts on this. The bike is a 1995 GL1500Ser with a Hannigan 2+2 Astro rig.

Have you checked your tires for bubbles, delaminations, embedded objects, or other damage?

Just did , thanks , but they are perfect. Air pressure good, no slop from bearings. Still checking it out.

I would check the driveshaft boot to be sure it’s not torn.

I a similar incident.
Had a GL1100 for a short time. On my 3 ride I stopped at a light and heard scurrying noise. Tilting my head to locate but it seemed all over then I felt something hit my right shoe. Looking down I see this sorta fat mouse running off. Car driver guy next to me laughed... I laughed and said that mouse just went under your car. I was then the only one laughing. 😉👍

Changing the oil can loosen sticky/stuck stuff, you'll hear a rattle or tinking then go away. Hopefully it'll stay away... like that mouse.

Well after looking over the bike and finding nothing visible loose or hanging, I believe, as suggested I'll check the driveshaft boot Wednesday. I rode around the block and this terrible intermittent screeching sound emanated from , what seemed by my feet. I could feel a vibration thru the pegs. After reading about the U-joint I think it might be ready to give up. If the U-joint is bad do you suggest I change the driveshaft as well , as everything will be dismantled. It will be a little more of a challenge to changes as the bike has a sidecar.

No driveshaft disassembly required for this inspection.

Well, jacked the bike up and rotated rear wheel. No clicking ,scraping , side to side movement. Boot not ripped or torn holes. When I rode around the block the screeching noise is pretty intense. At one point I could feel vibration thru the pegs. I can’t think of anything else that would cause the noise. Oil level is good, no drips or leaks under bike. I’ve checked sidecar connect points. Guess I’ll just remove wheel and drive unit an have a look before shelling out $$ for parts. (Jack stands in place after pics)..

Sounds like a bearing going when it squeals. but I don't feel any play in the shaft.

I had the most horrific screech on my GL1500 once (and not from a passenger!). Turned out to be a dry speedometer cable.

A sound clip could help. Pan side to side and pan right to left side of the bike equally. It'll help zero in where it's coming from.

Few years ago I used to get a hollowed sounding squeal while riding. Only happened 3 times & never happened since.
Of those 3 times I did partially zero in it came from the front of the engine. Water and oil pumps are up there.
On cars the water pump's bearing seal will squeal like a Witch if it's not properly lubricated. MAY-BEE?

Got up and went out and pulled the water pump off. Some crud inside but it does turn with slight resistance like the rubber bushing is resisting. Just want to know if this is normal or should it spin very freely. Also, split the rad hose on top of the pump so will be replacing both “Y” hoses. Twenty six years they have served this wing well.

Water pump removed for inspection. Turns but with slight resistance like against rubber. Should it turn freely?

I've never had a 1500 water pump in my hand to test, but I'd expect a little resistance as the shaft has to turn thru a rubber seal which keeps oil out of the coolant and coolant out of the oil....

Do the bearings feel nice and snug or can you wiggle the shaft any?

Found it. After checking the rear end an wheel , pulling the water pump an checking that bearing an finding nothing, I pulled the front wheel again. This this I really took a closer look and pulled the dust covers off totally . I noticed a very slight bump in the red covering over the bearing. I peeled it back and.....dry and rust getting ready to detonate. Had a front bearing kit so I replaced them today.. The water pump, as previously stated, I will replace an the hoses. Already ordered. Thanks for all the tips an help. Will be up and on the road again soon😎
