Front fork / tires wobble u turn

Post by mharnack »

When I go to take off mainly when I turn to the right, my front end wobble bad enough for me to drop bike. Any ideas. Like walking speed when I turn slow

Bad tires, bad wheel bearings, bad steering bearings, worn fork bushings, etc.
Lift the front wheel off the ground and give it a good shake. Look for play in any of the above.

There are good maintenance acts that will improve handling, especially if you have a wobble on deceleration (usually around 30mph with one hand).

Turning from a stop is a common issue on all bikes. Try reviewing these techniques before tearing in to maintenance.

What tire pressure are you running on the front tire. The 1500 needs at least 40psi. Also: Do you have a fork brace such as the BlackWing brace. Makes a world of difference in handling on the 1500.

I'm riding a 2000 gl1500 dunlop tired now around 55000 mile on bike. 1500 on tires ( I am on a raodtrip now went from Calif to Tennessee now on my way home)
I had to get my clutch slaved cylinder rebuild at Howard in nashville. The mechanic there told me he felt it and maybe the bearing on the crown could use tighten.

My 2K Goldwing the steering bearing were loose but the nuts were tight, made turning a real chore. So much so it felt the wheel would buckle under if I added throttle.
Oddly I had to retighten that nut a few times before the lower bearing race finally seated. I believe Honda assemblers were way too quick in their assembly lines and didn't check the steering head torque properly.
Now that it is seated I can go to full turn (hit the steering stops) and make turns without that wheel wobble feel.

Bearings (wheel and steering stem) as others have mentioned should be near the top of your list, but if your bike doesn't already have a fork brace, consider a Blackwing fork brace, as it definitely stiffens up the front end.

I am back home in ca. What a ride crosswind all the way home. I have an appointment May 11 with my motorcycle mechanic. I read the article on replacing bearing on front steering . I feel a little above my confidence level. Thank you

K I just heard from mechanic concerning wobble front end. I was told front forks had negative air pressure. I was told part of maintenance check air pressure ever year. To bring it by and they will check for me. Front bearing were a little lose and was torque..
I will pick up bike tomorrow.

Verdict, still out . I bought an air gauge to check pressure my gauge showed 20lbs psi. Way to high. (I think shop did that to stiffen up spring) It should be around 7psi. I lowered to 7 psi. I also installed blackwing fork brace. My next move is to replace fork spring and different bearing.

For my fork shocks I was looking into a bicycle shock air valve ( * ) to precisely control their air pressures.
But after reading this article ( ** ) am I actually wondering if the loss of air pressure worry is all in vain?
