1998 1500 Goldwing known issues

Post by dnieskes »

Hi!!
I have recently sold a '78 & '84 Goldwings and now fixing to purchase a 1998 1500.
As the previous one had known issues, are there any with this year that I should be concerned about?
Thank you

Timing belt may need to be done.
Switches get sticky.
Vacuum fuel shut off fails.
Overall maintainance makes a difference in what may need to be done (probably will need both sub-filters changed, those always get overlooked).
The '98 has the updated transmission from the Valkyrie, so no 4th gear issues to worry about. You still should install a shifter brace though.

Those are the only things of off hand I can think of.
Not a lot a major issues from '97 and up, the biggest issue this gen had was 4 gear issues mentioned above, and that was fixed in '97.

OEM alternators after 1996 aren't as robust, Honda switched from Japanese made to a Chinese manufacturer for the OEM alt in '96

I ride a '99 1500 SE.
I can tell you from experience that these bikes are WAY too comfortable, WAY too smooth, WAY too quiet, carry WAY too much luggage and put WAY too much of a smile on your face.
You have been forewarned!!!

You are going to want to ride it a lot more so it will take time away from other projects.

98 may have the white gauge faces, think they switched back to black in 2000. Its been so long not sure about this or if it would even make difference for you. I like the black gauges but wouldn't let it keep me from buying a nice 98. Complately forget about the alternators.

The OEM alt (Chinese version) trouble is rotor failures. Wire from rotor winding comes loose from the terminal, often repairable if you know what you are looking for.

If you have an aftermarket alternator in there, don't worry about it.

Thank you for all of the things to look for. I bought it and the only things that bother me is the N light doesn't work all the time, and changing the time. So far I drove it about 40 min so far, and the thing is fantastic!!!
