Reverse do not work normally

Post by fran674 »

Hello
Sorry I am french and it is not easy to be sure be understood
I have problem with my reverse on my goldwing 1500.
I don't need to pull out the handle to move it to vertical position and le handle don't stay engaged. No spécial noise in the gear box. But moving back maintaining the handle up is not comfortable. Could it be a bad cables relation or a broken spare part behind the handle.
I hope you understand my problem and could give me a hand
Many thanks
Francis

Is your problem, the reverse system operates before being properly selected?
Am I understanding you correctly?
If so per my Honda service manual start with simple check of relays
Remove right rear cover, battery is under it, starter relay switch A is right there, depress the starter/reverse switch button with the ignition switch on : the relay primary coil is normal if it clicks.
Remove cover where you check and fill oil, Deprss the starter/reverse switch button with the ignition switch on: the relay primary coil is normal if it clicks, this is Starter Relay switch B, 2 large cables go to it
Remove seat, turn the ignition switch on, the Reverse Relay Switch is on top of fuel tank, the relay primary coil is normal if it clicks when start/reverse switch button is depressed
Open relay cover, top right is number 3 relay and bottom left is number 6, when turning the ignition switch on the relay primary coil is normal if it clicks when start/reverse switch button is depressed

There is a reverse switch just below oil dip stick, disconnect the GRN/ORG wire terminal from the reverse switch, check for continuity between the switch and ground by touchng where wires attached and ground, There should be continuity with the reverse lever in the OFF position; no continuity with the lever in the ON position. To check the reverse switch will require a new sealing washer...

I don't think his problem is electrical, it sounds like the reverse lever won't stay up and he has to hold it up. Has the reverse lever been working ok and stopped recently or has it never worked for you? How long have you had the bike?
Try to learn from the mistakes of others..... you won't live long enough to make them all yourself!

On the reverse lever itself is a small rod which must be installed correctly into the cable drum. Small hole where the rod gets installed can be seen here in this picture at the 6 O'clock position.

I believe CT1500 has the quick answer, the pin in not in the hole.
Hope i did not waste his time checking relays.....

Hello
thanks for you replies. Exactly I feel it is not an electrical break down but a mechanical (i don't if this word is correct) problem.
So, if I understand clearly the problem is on the left side of the motorbike.
What is strange is that I don't need to pull out the handle to allow to move it up. Could be the rod out of dimensions or purely broken.
I will unmount this par and check.
In any case thank you for your quick help. Only atlantic ocean is the gap between us. but through the net we are so closed
Kind regards to every one

That pin can get easily bent and not fully actuate the mechanism also.

^^^^ this. I've seen this several times, when the handle was installed incorrectly with the pin not fully seated, and then the bolt is torqued down, which bends the pin.

Remove the reverse handle, and check the pin, see if it is bent.

hello guys
The problem is now fixed. the rod was bent and the circlips was away. One knock with a hammer and 0.50€ for 2 circlips (in case of) and all seems to be right.
I had to move cables tension because the rod could not enter in the hole. To day rainy so the real test is for sunny day.
Thanks to every one for help and for your tolerance for my twisty english.
Many thanks
Regards

My reverse will work normally, however, if I pull the lever to quickly it will miss recognizing the neutral gear. So I just put it down slowly lift the reverse lever for that sweet spot where the neutral light pops on and I am good. Not sure if thats the same issue or not.
