what oil can I use in a gl1500/6?
I recently bought a 1990 gl1500/6 and I need to give it an oil change. Not realizing about different grades I bought sae 10W40 Castrol GTX. Is this oil safe to use in this bike? I have use the same brand 20W50 in my gl1100 for years with no adverse effect. However the 90 is years newer and I just want to be sure I am doing the right thing. Thanks in advance for any help I can get on this.

Unless is meets JASO MA standards, DON'T USE IT in ANY motorcycle with a wet clutch.

Goldwingdocs admin has a great youtube that explains how to find the right oil to use. He explains not only checking the level, but shows the markings for the right kind of oil.happyisastateofmind wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 3:39 pm I recently bought a 1990 gl1500/6 and I need to give it an oil change. Many use Castrol 10w-40 in their bikes without any issues.
Look at the API "donut" on the bottle, so long as it does not have "energy conserving" in it, you should be fine.
While JASO MA is the standard that you want the oil to meet, there are many alternatives out there that do not have that certification, but do meet the standard. Most 10w-40 oils out that do not have the energy conserving donut and work just fine, as well as many "diesel" oils.
I am not going to go into what oil you should use, but Castrol 10w-40 is a useable oil in the Goldwing.

Hi guys.
It's been a long while since I touched my bike.
Got her unwrapped cleaned and getting ready for some over due service.
I looked Thu the post for after market oil filters most post are older and oil filter numbers don't seem the be on the shelf.
As for the Oil I found only one the seem to meet the requirements. No luck with a replacement filter.
Anyone? Bueller, Bueller..

NAPA Gold 1358
WalMart SuperTech ST6607
Amazon Purolator PBL14612
I like the Shell Rotella T6 oil that a few people here recommended. Clutch is smooth with no slipping and shifts nice.

I really like what Chevron Delo 400 LE Motor Oil 15W40 did for shifting in both the '85 1200 and the '97 1500.

Re: what oil can I use in a gl1500/6?
Unless the previous owner used synthetic, then just stick with the Castrol 10W-40 car oil. 15W is a bit much for the hydraulic valve lifters. The 10W-40 is not energy conserving and is fine for a wet clutch. I used it on my 1500 because it never had synthetic in it. I only ran the bike about 4K miles a year, so synthetic was a waste of money. Shifts were always smooth. I had a mechanic that built mini sprint cars with motorcycle motors in them. He said to use Castrol GTX. That is all he ever used.
I do use T-6 in my 1800. That bike goes on long trips and pulls a camping trailer. I use the T-6 for the extra protection and getting to the change interval recommended by Honda.
