No start until release start button?

Post by zackzuro »

I just want to share my recent experience with my '99 1500
I never had the issue with no start until release until a few weeks ago.
I read the threads here before and fell into the assumption that it was just an old battery issue and I didn't do anything immediately about it.
Then, I developed an intermittent stall problem (only at idle not while cruising) ( voltage drops?)
Restart the bike, and all was well , for a while
Eventually, the starter became intermittent as well and eventually quit.
Lights work, neutral indicator on, no starter, no cruise indicator prove out.
# 6 relay NOT the problem
3 hours to locate the circuit at fault, remove bodywork, and finally pinpoint the location.
9 pin Connector C57 that feeds the right handle bar controls, (start, kill switch, cruise) had an over heated pin for the Black / light green wire that powers the ignition module , and the starter relay circuit ( along with the Cruise prove out lights )
A total PITA to get to, its on the right side of the fairing and normally not accessible unless the fairing is removed.
Cleaned, repaired and bike starts with 1 sec. push on the button

Just something I wanted to share,
Maybe not the issue with everyone's machine but was with mine

Yes, those connectors that have been ignored for 20+ years can get corroded or otherwise have poor connections and cause hard to find problems. Another suspect for hard starting or start after release of the start button, can be the C54 connector (4 pin white) on the right side near the ECU. The power for all the coils go through that connector.

That C54 connector looks like an easy one to get to.
I'll definitely do an inspection / cleaning before I finish wrapping everything up.
It's been in the 90's here all week and my garage is not A/C'd

I had a very similar issue with my 88 1500. It left me stranded once with the same symptoms at 5am on my way to work. After trying to contact people I knew would be up at that hour and being un successful (they both had their phones off) I had to call and wake up my wife to come and get me and leave my precious girl sitting on the side of the interstate all by herself while I went home to get my truck and trailer. Spent two days tracing wiring and components to find that the kill switch had over heated and wasn't making good contact. After repairing the switch It was fine then left me stranded again. This time I knew where look first and it was the same issue so I cut the wires to the switch and wired them together and continued with my road trip impressing the guys I was riding with with my mechanical prowess. (cough cough) when I got home I soldered the wires together and heat shrink until I could find a switch to replace it with. That was six years ago I suppose I should start looking for a switch soon lol.
