1996 Goldwing 1500 SE

Post by timmerc »

Hi there!
Just purchased a 96' Goldwing 1500 SE. I have had many bikes over the years, but this is my first Goldwing. 68K miles, well cared for, very good condition. I bought it from a friend who can't ride anymore. Having trouble with the reverse gear. It won't disengage(?) and go into neutral, so I can't start it. I did replace the reverse switch that I saw was fairly common, but still nothing. I believe when I bought it everything was working, as I rode it home and used reverse a couple of times after. Apparently, there is a correct way to engage the reverse lever when going into reverse...(?) Any thoughts on other possible issues? I am glad this happened while at home and not out on the road.

Anything else I should watch for on this bike?...

It won't disengage MECHANICALLY?

Will the engine start?

Have you tried shifting it into gear, then back out?

Does the Reverse handle feel like it's actually connected?

Not sure about disengage mechanically... when I turn the ignition key on, it shows "R" like it is in reverse
No, it won't start - I understand it won't, unless in neutral. Green neutral lite will not come on, only the R lite.
Yes, tried shifting it in and out of gear - dosen't change anything.
It does feel like the reverse handle is connected and engaging. When I lift it up (like putting it in reverse), it will click and stay up...

First off the Reverse light should never come on unless the engine is running. When in reverse never try to use the toe shifter it is to be left in neutral, there is an interlock that prevents its' use which can get broken if forced.
You will have to start digging into the wiring.
