Cornering Lights 96 1500A

Post by 01196505gw »

My 96 Aspencade has what appears to be aftermarket cornering lights which do not work. Looking more closely what appears to be a receptacle for a relay is empty. So I plugged in a relay, the Hollsco Group G8MS-830 ordered through this website.
Now when I turn on my ignition all the lights come on as normal including the cornering lights. But when I turn on the turn signal the corresponding cornering light goes OUT. What I was hoping to accomplish was to have my cornering lights only come on when I turn on the turn signal. Thoughts anyone?

Wrong relay, the cornering lights OEM relay is normally closed contacts, circuit opens when relay is energized. The Hollsco relay which is used in 8 out of 9 sockets in the 1500 relay panel is normally open contact.

You'll want the OEM relay if you want them to function correctly as cornering lights.

I disconnected the ground on my cornering light relays so the lights would be on all the time. But I also changed the bulbs to the 50 watt LED. Cyclemax has them. Don't do this with conventional incandescent bulbs in the cornering lights, they get hot enough to melt the plastic fixtures.

So here’s what I did. These bulbs are 18w, pretty bright and do not seem to get very hot, so I kinda like the idea of both on all the time. I know this sounds kind of hokey but since the bike doesn’t know left from right, and I’ve never met a wire that knew what color was it’s insulator, I ran a jumper from the left relay to the right light and vice versa. Tidied everything all up with plug-in terminals, and now what I have is both lights on while driving and when I turn on a turn signal, the corresponding cornering light remains on and the opposite side goes out. It sounds kind of shade tree but like I say I made nice plugs for the connectors and did not cut or alter any of the wiring. And if I ever want to do it right, I just buy the closed relays.

does Goldwingdocs version not suffice? G8MS-H30? Also, are all relays in relay box interchangeable?

Nope, won't work in this application. The GWDocs relay is a normally open contact, cornering light relay is a normally closed contact. All the relays in the relay box except one are interchangeable and use the relays sold on the site.

The Blue one (#7)

I can relate, When I first got my 1500 I literally spent days reading all the threads in the 1500 section learning about her.

I bought mine from Big Bike parts. It included a relay and jumped wire. Easy plug and play. Even for someone not being around a bike for 50 years. 1997 GL 1500
