Shop Manual? and another question about idle?

Post by No1uno »

Here is a two part question:
Where do I find a shop manual for a 1993 Honda Goldwing Aspencade - since the dealers don't want to work on her, I guess I will do it myself, so where do I find a shop manual?

Second question: I have a very slight up and down idle - hardly noticeable but I know it.. how to find the issue and fix it? I had the carbs rebuilt in AZ and now when she idles it sounds like a diesel truck, at low RPMs, but when you get above 2K it goes away, I should say it sounds like a growl around the airbox area, you hear a flap noise like a plastic flap is closing and the noise goes away...
I am trying to find it but having no luck... it sounds like it is coming from the front of the air box... anyone ever heard of this sound?

Thanks for looking

There is a filtered air intake hose which gets connected to the right front underside of the air box. This air hose supplies the pulse air and shot air systems and if not connected will make a gurgling sound. You will need to get access to air box lift it up slightly and re-attach.
The slight surge at idle means it is running lean due either to a vacuum leak or mis-adjusted carbs.

I agree that sound you are hearing near the right front of the air intake is likely a hose has come off under the air filter housing. When the folks that worked on it last put the air filter housing back on, they probably didn't put it back on the fitting it goes on or they didn't get it on properly. As stated above, you can pull up the housing in the front and try getting it back on with some long needle nose pliers or a pair of hose pliers. You will find it hard to do because there is just not much area to work in to get the hose back in place. You might learn a couple of new words while trying to get it back on the fitting.

Look for a shop manual on E Bay. That is where I found my Honda factory manual when I had my 1500. Here is the link to the Clymer manual on Amazon. It is also a good reference if you can not get the Honda Manual. There were things in the Clymer that were very helpful that were not in the Honda Manual. I had both of them.

I've had some success with the larger of these pliers in putting that hose on.

Another option to putting that hose in place is to remove the right side fan. Then you can just reach in where the fan was and put it back on with your hand. Only problem with that is that fan is kind of hard to get back in position with all those wires and hoses in the area.
