1500. Can't get the shift shaft off.

Post by Quick Cal »

I'm trying to change a leaking seal and install the pivot mod. I don't have enough room to get the shaft off. It hits the frame.

I just read about taking out or loosening a couple of engine mount bolts and prying with a pry bar. I have one removed, but can't find the other bolt. Where's at at?

Thanks

Well I got the son of a gun!!

Maybe I didn't read a step about what gear you're supposed to be in. I was in neutral. Seemed logical. Is it mentioned anywhere?

Then it dawned on me to put it in gear and see what happens. I don't really remember, but I THINK I put it in first. With the one engine mounting bolt removed I put my big pry bar in there and pry'd with my right hand against my head, using my head too. Might be easier with a second person doing the prying. Or maybe it was prying the frame away from the engine, and not the engine away from the frame, if that makes since. I don't know if it really makes a difference. But I was able to just rotate the shaft just a little but more clockwise and it came right out!!! I was amazed.

Hope this helps someone.

Glad you got it figured out. I did not do the seal when I put the shifter pivot on, so did not have to fight that.

It really depends on the bike. When I did mine, I did the seal (my seal was done and leaking), and I didn't have to remove any bolts or pry anything.

When I put the shifter support on mine, I also replaced the shifter seal. I had trouble getting mine off the shaft also. I removed that motor mount bolt you did and pried on it and finally got it off. Then I took a grinder to the shaft and removed some material from it so it would have some clearance. Next time I need to remove it, it should come off easily.
