Reverse Gear Handle 1999 GL1500

Post by tim.mckee »

I am still having issues with the reverse gear not moving into full position (all the up) to engage the reverse gear. (Handle moves into full position) However, I have to "feel" the gear engage, usually 3/4 of the way up. The bike will reverse but the handle usually falls, and it goes out of reverse mode. The R light will not light up and the neutral light stays on. When the handle is in the full up position, the gear is engaged but the bike will not move. The neutral light will go out and the R light will go on. I have checked (I hope) all of the electrical system, even replaced those connected to the reverse gear, cleaned, and made sure there are no breaks in the wires.

Any help will be appreciated. A few Gold Wing mechanics have tried to tackle this issue but no solution thus far. My fear is that the problem may be in the transmission itself.

Sounds to me like the whole cable and switch system is way out of alignment. (possibly with damaged parts, too) The service manual has a whole section on setting all that up.

The pin on the reverse handle that engages the linkage could be bent. Common problem. Remove the handle to check.

The reverse handle has an interlock pin. If it is functioning correctly the handle needs to be pulled out away from the body about an inch to dis engage the pin before moving the lever. Once it is in the vertical position the spring in the handle should pull it back in and re-
engage the pin do the handle will stay vertical e while you are reversing. The handle and pin have been screwed up on every 1500 I have seen. That said I have been able to repair them all so far.

Those pins are still available, but the last time I changed one (on my bike!) they were around $5. Now they are closer to $25. Which is a crazy price for a tiny pin of steel, but as parts inventory decreases, the price increases.

The part number for the pin is 24808-MAM-L40

Thanks, y'all. I'll check the pin and the alignment of the handle. The cables are brand new and didn't help fix the problem.
