New fuel pump, but bike won’t start.

Post by SAvery32 »

I have a 2000 gl1500se and I recently found out that my fuel pump was dead. I bought an oem Honda replacement pump, new hangar, the whole nine yards. I took a picture of the top of my old pump before disassembly so that I would know that the plugs went back in the same location they came out of. I also replaced all of my relays in the process. The new pump is pumping fuel, and functioning properly, but the bike still will not start. I got it to fire for a split second with the help of some starter fluid on top of a brand new air filter, but I can’t get it to stay running. Can anyone help me get back on the road? Thanks.

Sounds like possibly the fuel petcock needs to be rebuilt or the fuel filter is clogged. The petcock is just ahead of the gas filler cap in the filler door. Check that you have fuel through this area.

If the carb bowls are dry it is going to take some cranking. I go through this every spring after it sits all winter.
Since it tried to start with starting fluid I suspect all is well, it just needs gas. additional starting fluid works(be careful) or I
have jumped 12V to the fuel pump to fill the bowls.

starting fluid is great for cracking pistons. you can open the drain screws on the bottom of the carbs and see if fuel is getting to the carb bowls as part of your diagnosing the problem.
