Maybe I’m just stupid, but on older bikes there was a switch with a little spring hooked to the rear brake pedal.
The GL1500 does not seem to have this, and my brake lights only activate when pulling the handlebar lever.
Where is the switch that would be my first step in trouble shooting, no?
Where is the brake pedal switch?

There is a switch hooked to a spring to the brake pedal spindle.
Part #6 is the switch, #5 is the spring

Re: Where is the brake pedal switch?
I located the switch, and it tests bad.
I am unable to remove the indicated chromed panel, and I don't want to break it. It seems like it should slide up, but only the front side does.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try unbolting the pillion floorboard. Believe the chrome piece is bolted to it.

Lift up the rubber boot on the passenger foot pegs, it will expose two allen-head bolts which fasten the foot peg (and the chrome piece, to which it is attached).
