When replacing timing belts do the cover gaskets need to be replaced also?

Not normally. They are designed to be reused. Just inspect them when you do it. When I did mine, the gaskets were hard and brittle, and so I replaced them:

Thank you. I will check them out. I might just go ahead and get new ones beings it is an 89. Are there any other gaskets in that area I should be replacing. the covers will be off anyway. Besides I don't want to keep taking covers off anymore than I have to. Don't feel like having to replace covers because off broken tabs or fasteners.

None that you would be touching near the timing belts, no.
