Shuts off after 75 to 80 miles of riding

Post by Pioneercw96 »

I have a 1996 Goldwing. My problem is when I ride about 75 to 80 miles it shuts off and acts like it is running out of gas. It chugs for a short bit then just quits running. I can't get it restarted until the next day then it seems to run fine again until I go another 75 or 80 miles. I have changed my filter and the defibulator pitcock. Last time it shut off I noticed my fuel filter was only half full as I turned the engine over it didn't appear to be flowing. After I got it hauled home, it sat overnight. Next morning it started right up like nothing was wrong. There is no vacuum after taking the gas cap off. Could it be a fuel pump problem? Could it be going bad or maybe the tip bank sensor?

If it was the Bank Angle Sensor, it wouldn't crank.
Air in the fuel filter is somewhat normal. It gets trapped at the high point and the flow isn't enough to purge it.
You could hook up a fuel pressure gauge before your next ride.
Thing is if the carbs ran dry, the next day you would have to crank on it a while to get them to fill back up before it starts.
I'm wondering if something is getting hot? Maybe try to just run the engine for 30 minutes plus and see if you can make it happen that way. A lot easier to troubleshoot at home, than out on the road.

The GW fuel pump dies a slow death doing just what you are experiencing. Next time it dies remove seat and fuel line off pump cover then attach a replacement hose to outlet and aim overboard while cranking engine. A stream of gas should be coming out, if not then with a test light attached to B terminal of tank cover confirm voltage is getting to the pump and if so replace pump with OEM for a long trouble free fix.
