Air filter disaster 1999 GL1500SE

Post by Ironbuck »

First off, let me say how wonderful the members of this forum are. I have learned so much from so many of you. This will be my third season with my Goldwing(Racquel). I have followed the DYI articles and have been able to do several maintenance procedures. I am not very mechanically inclined. The maintenance history on my bike showed that I was overdue to replace the filters. I spent 8 hours yesterday working on her (boy there's a lot of Tupperware to take off). I was just amazed when I took the cover off the air filter. I will try to attach a picture. I couldn't believe the bike could run let alone run ad well as she does. Air filter was packed with black oil sunflower seeds. After emptying the vacuum 3 times, I'm pretty confident that I got most of the seeds out. I put quarter inch galvanized hardware cloth on the air intake as Scott suggests. I'll try to take other preventive steps to keep this from happening again.

Unfortunately for me, the air filter was just a cupboard. The living part of the residence was under the rubber mat on the left side of the engine.
