Gl1500 started making a very weird noise

Post by JeffEbner »

I was driving home from work at about 4 miles from my house my GL 1500 started making a horrible noise.

The noise matches the engine RPMs regardless of clutch or gear. There is no change in vibration or power before or after this noise started. The best I could describe it it sounds like a very loud speedometer cable sound but I don’t think that’s it. I pulled the timing covers off and check the timing belts which were just replaced about 200 miles ago and are still exactly where they should be.

I made a video, so everyone could hear what I’m hearing, hopefully someone can let me know what this might. I've heard when alternators go out, they make a horrible sound, could this be it?

Look for timing belt rubbing on something. Also there is an exhaust leak.

10-4. I will pull the cover off completely today to get a closer look. It's funny about the exhaust leak. I kept thinking I was hearing it, and everywhere I've been, I've got lots of comments on the bike and the "exhaust leak". I appreciate the advise. Thanks!

That sounds like a failed bearing to me. Check the bearings on your timing belt idler pulleys.

A stethoscope would pin point it.

For sure, a mechanic's stethoscope is one of the most useful tools trying to pinpoint a noise in a crowded motorcycle engine.

Well. For some reason I lost half the pulley. Seems odd since the bearing seems fine. I am thankful that the belt didn’t break, almost did, but it held on.

That's pretty bizarre.
Lucky the belt didn't come off.
Good thing you were only 4 miles from home.
