Will a 180/60 16 fit the rear of a GL1500

Post by jjsinaz »

I ordered the wrong size (8 and 6 sometimes look the same to old eyes depending on the font) and want to know if I can put the 180 on instead of a 160. Thanks :D

The stock tire, a 160/80-16, is 26.1" in diameter and 6.3" wide.

The Austone Taxi tire, a 170/60-16, is 25.4" in diameter and 6.7" wide. It barely fits between the swingarm, and rubs on the inner fender over bumps such that the fender has to be modified to get it to fit.

Your 180/60-16 is 24.5" in diameter and 7.1" wide. I don't think you're going to get it to fit between the swingarm fully inflated without it rubbing, and it will certainly rub on the inner fender. You'll also have a much higher RPM at highway speeds.

I have a 195 60 16 car tire on my 89 it rubbed the plastic inner fender a wee bit but a heat gun fixed that. It took a bit to get it past the rear gear. I documented the challenge in Darksiding thread.
It might be worth mounting it up and trying it, you never know ,,,?
