Wrecked my Motorcycle

Post by slackr01 »

Well, I broke the cardinal rule about not playing with your phone while driving any vehicle let alone a motorcycle. I was riding too close to a curb and caught the front wheel which caused me to give more throttle an I hit a fire hydrant

It was probably the worst place I could have hit it. I can see now that my timing is off.

Without thinking I started the bike to see if I could drive it home. The question is do you think that I ruined the engine by starting the bike? Is there a way to tell for sure?

If it happened to me I'd see if
timing gear or cam end bent.
Get the cam timing correct, roll the motor by hand, plugs out to feel for interference. None? Compression test, if that is ok fire it up. Lucky you!

Here's what I would be worried about. This sprocket is damaged enough that the belt is not fully seated. If this caused it to skip a tooth, you've got trouble.

Not trying to be a wise guy, but a fire hydrant?
You couldn't find something softer to hit?
Good luck getting the damage fixed.
Finding the parts will likely be the most difficult part.

Is the sprocket the problem or is that cam belt stretched to the point of not fitting the sprocket properly. How old are the cam belts.

Did the engine turn over all the way, and did you hear or feel anything unusual?

I would assume having to time it as if it was freshly rebuilt. Pull all spark plugs, and the timing belt on that side, then reinstall the belt, properly timed. Once you have done that, use a socket wrench and rotate the crankshaft -- GENTLY -- and feel for interference.

No interference? Install the plugs and fire it up.

Interference? Engine is history. Either replace it, or it's a parts bike.

Thanks for the help. I have parts on order. Just praying that it’s ok. When I started it I didn’t hear any loud banging noises but when I rotated it by hand I could feel some interference.
