Setting timing belts

Post by jonnich93 »

I am new to goldwings. I have a 1993 goldwing SE with 26000 miles. It sat for years and I changed belts and tensioners. I set deflection on belts at about .300. After bike warms up and when under load I can hear tensioner sound. Starting out in higher gears or going up steep hill. Is this sound common to goldwings. Do I need to adjust or turn up radio.

What do you mean when you say you can hear tensioner sound? If belts are too tight you would hear a whine.
You say you set the deflection at .300.
The belts should have between 5 and 7 mm, .3 of an inch it is closer to 8 mm, so the belts should not be too tight, if anything they are a little loose.

With bike on center stand and ran until fan kicks in, I have about 3/32 slank in the belts mid way between pulleys. I set them tighter with about .250 deflection and then the pulleys whined as they were to tight, So I then reset to now .300 deflection and it runs quiet at a idle and when I first start out quiet. 5 miles down the road I can hear belts running across tensioners. Tensioners are new belts are new. Is this normal?

How are you measuring the amount of slack? How much pressure are you applying?

Did you do it the way it shows in this thread

Edit,
3/32 is just over 2 mm, that is way too tight, 9/32 is around 7 mm.

Found my problem, left side tensioner was bad. Has lateral movement which is excessive for a new tensioner. Cleaned up one of my used ones and installed. The old tensioners only have 21000 miles on them. Have not road tested yet but forever hopeful Thanks for advice

Glad you figured got it figured out.
Sorry I wasn't much help, but it seemed you had the belts correctly tensioned yet the symptoms you were describing seemed to indicate they were too tight.

Let us know if changing the tensioner back to the original solved the problem.

Engine is running good. I want to go to Sturgis on it. Now I'm on to tires, brakes and wheel bearings. Will be a new experience taking bags off aand such. Take my time and get it right the first time. Thanks again Jon
