Fuel pump only works if powered separately

Post by schaanman »

Well got it down to the fuel pump being an issue and the fact that it works when I jump it from the battery directly but not when I turn the key switch on. I checked all the relays and they all clicked and all the pieces are okay at least the ones that I know about. Are there any other relays other than the ones next to the fuses? It turns over and cranks and I have a strong battery now after not having one and still won't fire any suggestions would be great I've tried searching on YouTube and elsewhere not coming up with anything that fits my scenario. Man this bike has a lot of wires.

For 88-89 there is a fuel pump relay, but I don't know where it is. Should power the pump for a few seconds at key on, then turn off until started.

I could locate it either and I did some research it doesn't seem to exist. But I pulled all my relays out and check them and put them all back in their slots, give it a try and it started. If anybody happens to read this and can tell me where that relay is for the fuel pump I'd appreciate it. Thanks 1988 GL 1500

Your bike should have a relay for the fuel pump, later years they skipped the relay and ran the pump through the ECU. However this has caused Problems with fuel pumps burning out the circuit in the ECU that powers the fuel pump. There are manuals on this forum, perhaps you can locate the relay that way. Good hunting!

I was having the same problem with my 1991 and traced it down to a faulty kill switch on the handlebars

It's funny, I had read this post yesterday before you posted your reply and picture. Then I went out to do some work on my bike,, I have the bags off and was working away when I saw that relay that is in the picture you posted and thought "I wonder if that could be the fuel pump relay the guy was looking for." ;)

Not sure what's located in that position on a '93 (even though I own one) but it won't be a fuel pump relay. The '90 on up 'wings don't have a fuel pump relay, fuel pump is powered directly by the ECM.

While the '88 and '89 'Wings look the same as the later models, when it comes to parts other than body/frame/engine block the '88/'89 models are entirely different animals, especially in the carburetion and electric stuff!

I guess it isn't even in the same spot, after taking another look at the pic I see this is on the opposite side of the bike.
Maybe the air compressor?

On '90 and up models the diode box is installed in that location, it has a few more wires going to it. :) Fuel pump relay on the left.
