OEM Alternators - where best to get one

Post by samwing1500 »

I searched on HONDA OEM PARTS and found several parts houses offering it. Odd thing, the web sites seem
to use the exact same search data and parts diagrams. Some even have
the same price to the penny. Prices ranged from $388.27 to $522.93 (US dollars)
Question 1: Where is a good place to buy a new HONDA OEM alternator? Are they Hitachi 40 amps?
Question 2: I saw a statement that all GL1500 alternators after 1996 were made in China instead of Japan and
dont last.
The original I have came on my other 2000SE.
The tag on it says "LR140-708C, Made In Japan, HITACHI." Would it actually be a China made
alternator? Or was I lucky enough to get a good one?
I would like to put on a new one and continue to carry my original as a spare.

If it says Hitachi, you got a good one.
I managed to find a Hitachi at a bike shop on the internet.
It was probably the last one left out there.
And it cost me about $400.
Good luck in your search.

If you don't have a time machine, I would have your current one rebuilt over a Chinese replacement. Brushes and bearings are probably all you need to go another 20 years.

Thanks for the replies. The Hitachi I have came off of my 2000SE 18 years ago
when I put a Compufire on. I kept the Hitachi as a spare but in 85,000 miles
I never had a problem with the Compufire, so the Hitachi only has about 12,000 miles
on it. I sold the the other 2000 SE with 93,000 on it and the Compufire was still doing its job.
I think my best bet now would be put the Hitachi on and carry the other one as
a spare. Sounds like the Hitachi has a lot of miles left in it. it works perfect.
Thanks again

Unsurprisingly, most of those web sites with the identical data, are using the same source site and system for their parts data.
