When the volume goes low does the mute indicator come on at the dash display? Mine had a corroded plug on the back of the radio that did the same as yours.

When you 'fix it', where are you tapping? When it clears up when you tap:

If a knob on the radio it may be an internal issue.

If the radio itself, it might be that the main cable going into the radio is loose, or the connections need cleaning, as mentioned above.

But the symptoms hint that the mute switch on the handlebar might need some attention. The are numerous threads on this site explaining how to clean them.

The mute indicator is on the top left of the display. About 3/16 in high and 3/4 in long . I tapped in the same location to get mine to work. If i remember right the " mute on " grounds 1 of the wires in the plug on the back of the radio. When I took it apart and cleaned it there were also wires loose in the connector that might have shorted to cause the problem . Don't know if cleaning it or tightening the wires cured the problem. It was in the larger of the 2 plugs on the radio. Somewhere on this site was a thread on the mute wire in the plug. Hope this helps. I forgot more than i remember.

I have a Mute problem listed elsewhere in this forum. I sent mine to Sierra Electronics for repair after talking too a gentleman there who told me the problem was not in my switch (which I had already removed from the system) The problem is in the radio itself which he is used to fixing by eliminating the switch internally in the radio.
I would suggest talking to them.

My radio just came back and I have installed it and checked and all is well now.
Quick, reasonably priced and well done.

bill.
