gl1500 Rear Shock? Sticker Shock!

Trying to coax a few more years out of it ... have the rear end (rear assembly) removed to rebuild the rear end of a 1993 GL1500 Aspencade

The Air shock seems to be in good shape, holds pressure, etc.
The spring shock is what I'd expect after 130,000 miles. When considerable pressure is used to compress it - it snaps back instantly when released... no dampering at all that I can tell.

So I went on line to buy a new one and ... Holy Mother of Pearl ... they cost about as much as my first car ... factory new are discontinued, the aftermarket new are discontinued, the replacement parts come in pairs and eliminate the Air Suspension, which I do use ... and based on the experience I had testing my shock I'm pretty certain none of the used shocks on Ebay are likely to have been tested to see if they do in fact absorb shocks.

Has anyone gone the YamaSaki-Davidson route of finding one that looked about right and done the trial and error thing?
