Melted battery terminal

Post by Vash »

Bike will not start. First thing I was going to do was charge battery. Pulled cover and found this.

Battery is only 1 month old. This is neg side.

Going to get another one.

Any ideas why this happened.

Can not seem to get pic to load. Neg side is partly melted.

There was no picture, but I think you're talking about something like this:

Melted battery terminal
Melted battery terminal

This is generally caused by a bad connection. Anytime a connection has contamination - grease, dirt, corrosion, anything that impedes electric current, it causes resistance. When you put large amounts of current through a resistor, it causes heat. Heat melts things.

So you either had a dirty battery terminal or connector, or the cable itself (usually where the connector is crimped onto the cable) has corrosion.

Update

Got new battery. Now I get power to relay A but not to relay B. I hear A click but no power comes out. All fuses and relays good. Battery is 12.8v. How power in signal wire. Got a new relay A coming in tomorrow hope this fixes it. I pulled starter as well and bench tested it. Starter tested good.

Update

Replaced relay A all good except now I have to have throttle full open to start. Hoping it is due to no fuel.in carbs and will get better now that she will be ran a few times a week.

Does the engine spin faster when you open the throttle wide? Sometimes when you are down on electric power to the starter for whatever reason, the resistance of closed throttles is more than the starter can overcome.

After a few times it starts great now. No choke or throttle needed. I think the bowls were empty. If I remember right I drained them. Lol
