New rear tire rubbing on rubber mud flap

Post by heus »

97 SE 19,500 miles. Stock size rear tire installed by Honda dealership. Have been smelling hot rubber in the rear at the end of a ride. I found that the rubber flap in front of the rear tire is contacting the tire.Did not have this problem with the old tire. Two questions:1. Can I leave it as is? 2. Why would this happen on a stock tire? I have an appointment to take it back to the dealer and I plan to do that.

I guess my biggest question is why would this be rubbing? My bike does not sit low in the rear. In fact I'm almost tippy-toeing when at a stop. Stock tire size. Can I access this inner fender under the seat?

Perhaps it is coming loose or is cracked?

Funny you should mention that. The inner fender is cracked at the top but doesn't look like it is sitting any lower than normal.

There is what looks like an aluminum angle that attaches the top of the mud flap to the plastic inner fender. Looks like you could just bend it to get the clearance you need.

This is the front top of the mud flap.

Finally found what was wrong and the crack gave it away. The front inner fender had sunken down about an inch. I tied it back up and all good now.
