1500 valve chatter

Post by vcdc »

I bought my 95 Wing in May 1995. It now has 237K+ miles. For about the last 10,000 miles the valve ticking has been getting steadily worse. Listening with a stethoscope, I found that the ticking noise is only coming from the left bank of cylinders. I had found a bad vacuum tube by the middle cylinder left bank, which I replaced. The ticking went away for like a few thousand miles but now the ticking is back again. I have always kept a strict maintenance schedule with this machine. It is now on it's 3rd timing belt with 57,000 miles. Can the valve ticking be caused by a vacuum leak some where? A stretched timing belt? I hate to give up an this motorcycle, but is it toast?

It could be another vacuum tube or the Cam belt/tensioner. Did you change the tensioner when you replaced the Cam belt? There's a great video on YouTube from Delboy's Garage that goes step by step through the process

I hope someone with more experience than me chime's in with a possible cause and solution.

Yes, I did change out the tensioners at last belt change, 57 K / 5 years ago. That does make sense if the tensioner is failing could cause the ticking. Starting the belt change this afternoon.
