Water Pump changes between 1996 and 1997 GL1500

Post by edju »

My 96 Aspencade is now nearing 100 K miles and had never had the timing belts changed. I had an idler whine (so I thought) so while inside I replaced the belts and idler pulleys. All put back together, but still the whine! Must be the water pump. I happened to have one on hand with a correct part number, it looked quite similar with some changes to the O ring placement. I installed it, and lo and behold, oil ran out as fast as I put it in. I have now learned that between these model years, alot of tweaks and engineering changes were made, including the water pump, which seals completely differently on the 97+ wings. While the part number is the same, the model year must be specified in order the get the correct pump. Please see pics for comparison. The new pump (97+)is for sale btw, just pm if interested.

This is the 96 off my bike. Note seal about 1/4 inch from flange.

Here are the two water pumps side by side. It was stupid to think they would be compatible.
