Over my head

Post by WingManJack89 »

Good morning,

A few weeks ago, I picked up an 89 GL1500 for a song. Now... having a little buyers remorse as this thing has issues. Already pulled the carbs and they went out for a rebuild, but now I'm finding issues with the fuel pump and rear master cylinder. But one thing at a time, lets address the fuel pump.

When I pulled the carbs, they were dry as hell. I checked the power to the fuel pump and it is getting power, but no fuel coming out. I pulled the pump and attempted a direct wire to the battery as a test. Positive to the "B" terminal, and negative was attempted on both the other terminals, however I got nothing. So... I think the pump is shot. I contacted a mechanic that knows alot about these bikes and he is recommending a fuel pump rebuild kit by All Balls Racing (47-2007). When I search this part, I am not finding good reviews. So here are my questions...

1) Did I test my fuel pump correctly or should I try something else?
2) Has anyone had any luck with this fuel pump rebuild kit from All Balls?
3) If not, what fuel pump's are you using??? Don't want to spend $400 for the honda pump.

Thanks in advance. Have a great day.

Thinking there is a thread in DIY section for fuel pump. If bike has been sitting then could be many surprises and discoveries. Good luck with new bike. :)

Patience, Jack. It may take a bit to fix it's ills, but when you get
done, you'll have the nicest bike you've ever ridden.
And I'm sure others here will agree with me on that!

at the fuel cap that silver disk thing with 2 fuel lines n vac hose is a shut off valve so unless you bypassed that you will not get any fuel

and dry carbs just means its been sitting and it evaporated

follow fuel line from tank and disconnect at the fuel shut off

retest

a local Honda Tech told me in 35 yrs he has never had to replace a pump

but it’s possible others have though maybe they misdiagnosed
