96 ASP Wing - wiring and engine noise

Post by 84wing1200a »

Recently got another bike, a 96 Gl1500 that has 98k miles. Does not run, PO stated it needed a starter.

Installed new battery and begun the dianostics of the bike. Got the starter to turn the motor over, however, there is a metallic rumble/clanking that happens while it turns over. Suspecting bad starter reduction gears or possible idle starter gear dont really know.

Shot ether through the breather and she would not pop off. removed the carbs and clearly can tell there is water immersion damage to include clumping wet oxidation powder in the intake runners. Shot ether throught the runners and she acts almost she wants to run. I know this is crude.

chief concern is addressing the viabiity of the engine. Carb def need to be rebuilt as well as intake removed and cleaned to include ensuring the intake ports are cleaned as well. Damage is concentrated to the left side (kick stand) side of the battery so it happen while sitting up.

Another note, there is plug connection within the right front pocket of the fairing that has some decent mice damage, would like to know if you guys would know what those plugs go to so i can address it and review the wiring schematics.

As i know more, i will share. thanks.

Do a cylinder leakage test or at least a compression test to check the viability of the engine.
There is no factory wiring in that pocket. However, it is a common place for people to install add ons like phone chargers, music players, gps, heated gear stuff, and the like.

Ok found some time to diagnose some more also took couple pics of the wiring I was talking about. Apparently the noise is about the starter idle gear and curious how easy it is to remove these intake see pics to reference.

I guess no one knows what that bulk wiring connection is in the right front pocket. on a side note, I am curious if you guys can tell me whether an engine out of a 88 would work on this 96? I took the starter off the 88 and the gears and starter are different than whats on the 96, also the 88 has nearly identical miles and seems to be in a whole lot better shape. figure, I can just swap the motors since the 96 has to be removed to change out that starter idle gear.

Looking for suggestions.

Hard to tell from your picture but that might be the C73 wiring connector. My service book is packed away at the moment so I can't confirm.
88-89 are much different from the later years, so not an easy swap but if you have both bikes you should have all the bits you will need. Wiring is different so you might want to swap the harness. What is bad on the 88 to just not use it as is?

Well the 88 is nearly a basket case on wheels. It has great parts. Whereas the 96 is complete and needing further fleshing out. I’m in the process of rebuilding the carbs and going to see if the bike will even run. If she will run adequately enough then I will just drop the motor and replace that starter idle gear. However if the 88 is a direct swap and I will not have to downgrade to get it to run, I have that option as well. Or better yet, if I can swap it from the 88 onto the 96 omitting anything not conducive to running then that be great.

Hopefully will no more this weekend once Randakks parts come in. If the bike doesn’t run well guess she is going to be stripped down. The 88 is too far gone to swap 96 Tupperware and what have you over to it.

That connector below the right pocket might be C72 (black 13 pin). There are a lot of instrument and dash lights going through that connector. Does the temp and fuel gauge work? They go through that connector. Also the neutral light has some wiring through there.
