Start switch intermittent
I just picked up a 2000 GL1500. I discovered the start button is intermittent. After disassembly and cleaning, it still doesnt work properly. Upon calling multiple parts stores and dealers, I discover the switch cluster is obsolete, and unavailable. Used ones an ebay..but probably no better than mine. I did find some for a 1500SE, and they look identical, but have different part numbers. Will they work? Any other solutions would be helpful....I suppose wiring in a separate switch is an option..but aesthetically undesirable. Disappointed my new old steed is "obsolete"

Re: Start switch intermittent
The SE has lighted controls. I believe your bike is even wired to accept them. If not, you could add that or just leave them unplugged.
Re: Start switch intermittent
Ah..so do you figure that is the only difference..the units look identical...I would imagine the basic wiring is the same, no? I cant find one anywhere for the 1500A.

Re: Start switch intermittent
Are you certain the start switch is intermittent? Could be a failing start relay or bad connection somewhere else. The start circuit is fairly complex on this bike. I'd say further testing is in order.

Re: Start switch intermittent
Yes, I have the switch on my bench, cleaned it and testing continuity with an ohm meter. Contacts at mid push..sometimes, and cuts out at full push. It is a very simple switch inside..after cleaning and polishing contacts it should work..one contact seems to be a little out of place in the moulded top where the wires connect..that, coupled with 23 years of wear..
Re: Start switch intermittent
The previous owner told me the switch was acting up as well..said he had to wiggle it to get it to work..but he only bought the bike for one trip with his wife..and wasnt motivated to fix it..
