Hey all, I’m looking at picking up a 2000’ SE but it needs a new rear tire.
Since the process to get that rear tire off is so involved, I’m wondering if anyone can shed some light on how much they’ve been charged by a shop to get everything replaced?
Thanks!

From my experience they don't charge by the job exactly, but rather the amount of time the book says it should take. Rarely, but it sometimes happens, if the book says it will take 2.5 hours and it is done in 2 and you're a regular customer they might only charge for two hours. Shops usually post their hourly rate. Kinda sucks, but that's what we got for stuff we can't perform ourselves.

Really depends on the shop. Call around. I had a local shop that would do it for free when I bought tires.
Call the dealer, but be sure you're sitting down.
If you need a bunch of stuff done like brakes and such, do it all at once while the wheel is off.

In Jacksonville, Florida the dealerships absolutely will not work on anything over ten years old. They won't even replace tires on my 1992 Interstate. They say that they are worried that the bolts will break off. No worries about that as the wheels are removed fairly often to replace the tires anyway. I take the tire off and take it to Cycle Gear and they mount and balance the new tire for about $25.00 if I purchase their new tire and they have decent tire prices.

Since most shops won’t be open until Tuesday I just wanted to get a head start and have an idea of pricing. Will definitely still be calling them, just hoping someone here has recent experience.
As for removing tire, with these bikes it’s a little more involved than I have time for compared to some other bikes I’ve had. Otherwise that would absolutely be the plan to cut down on costs.

Really, it's not a hard job, just time-consuming and requires a certain amount of care.

Re: Price to Replace Tires
For those wondering, I was able to call a few shops that were open on a Monday. Got quotes between $100-300 in labor plus a $300 rear tire, I'd say $100 in labor seems worth it considering the time it takes to take the rear wheel off, especially if you're still paying the $35 in labor on a loose wheel anyways for tire install
