Intermittent fuel leak 1989 1500

Post by Dgilley111 »

1989 1500. Have cleaned carbs, replaced accelerator pump, replaced vac lines. I have a raw fuel smell sometimes, and fuel mileage dropped 10 mpg. Anybody had anything like this? Runs great

Vacuum petcock is a common cause for that.

Rambozo maybe correct on this one. Easy to figure out, open gas access door and start the motorcycle, it shouldn't take long and you will see gas leaking out the weep hole on the bottom off the auto fuel shutoff valve, and yes it can be a substantial leak. It does leave a puddle underneath the bike by the center stand. Easy to fix, rebuild kits are available from several aftermarket companies, and YouTube has a great short tutorial on how to rebuild it. BTDT...twice The! The most difficult part is all the plastic you need to disassemble to get to it. Good luck!
