This topic is mainly for people living in the UK or continental riders likely to visit the UK.
The GL1500 does not have a catalytic converter, so with the new law in London and the suburbs known as Greater London, they have am "Ultra Low Emission Zone" (called ULEZ) which the GL1500 exhaust emission does not comply with, so you have to pay £12.50 per day to ride in Greater London or face a £60 fine each time you enter the zone.
Riverside Motorcycles in Bow, London E3 have a machine to test your bike emission and if it complies they register it with the authorities so when you bike is noticed by the number plate reading cameras you are left alone, even if your bike is not registered in the UK.
If your bike doesn't comply they fit catalytic converters, test it then register it (not cheap).
Mine cost £635 to modify. Mine did not comply so they fitted "CATS", issued a certificate and registered it.
These ULEZ zones will be extended to other major cities in the UK, when they do, I'm now ready for them, I live in France but visit the UK every month with my bike and I stay in Greater London.
As I have a Black Widow aftermarket exhaust system there are removeable connecting tubes between the mufflers and the collector box, they cut a piece out of the tubes and welded CATS in the tubes
the black lump in the middle is the cat, the smaller tube sticking out of the main tube is just an extra baffle I fitted to make it quieter.
Hope some of you find this useful.
Alex

Re: 1500 exhaust replacement
It's really insane that they are enacting laws or policies without grandfather clauses, effectively outlawing (or fining) noncompliant vehicles.
You can still see people driving Model T's from 1910 on the road here, simply because they are grandfathered in. They don't meet safety, emissions or any other regulation, but by virtue that they existed before the regulation, they get to still be used.

Re: 1500 exhaust replacement
In the UK, exhaust emission, speed cameras, and other governing gadgets have no real meaning and are nothing to do with the environment, it's all about how much money can the government steal from the public. A few years ago in a suburb of London, the local council put yellow criss cross boxes at busy junctions, you must not enter the box unless your exit is clear or you get a fine, just after one of the boxes they put a traffic light so when it turned red, you had to stop in the box and get a fine, this was the bright idea of some council beurocrat because they were short of money. when a tv station got hold of a leaked email they made mincemeat of the said council. So Grandad clauses mean nothing in the UK. Glad I don't live there anymore, I just visit.

Posts like these make me glad that I live in the U.S. Although there is a certain element here that would like us to have the same regulations as Europe.
