Steel covers

How important are the steel covers underneath the bike and below the passenger foot pegs?

Mostly just to keep from seeing the innards. When I reinstall mine I put teflon tape on the little bolts so they won't corrode and freeze up. In fact, I use Teflon tape on a lot of the littler bolts and screws that you can't get too rough with. Keeps most moisture out of the threads and lubes them a little.

They were designed to move the hot air flow under the bike away from legs and feet and protect from burns happening.

Those steel covers saved my bacon one time. (I would have looked like cooked bacon if not for them)
The bike fell over and my left foot got trapped under the bike. No burns thanks to the cover.

Thanks, I'll put them back on. I took the back wheel off to replace the tire. I found the spline on the final drive dry, missing an oring , and worn out. Bought used replacement parts and new orings and moly paste. I got a weekend of work coming up.
