1500 Side cover broken post repair

Post by FirstWing1982 »

In preparing the bike for the new season, the battery side cover broke a post when being removed. These were chromed replacement covers a couple of years ago and they fit very securely. I reviewed many posts that stated ABS glue worked well. I wanted a little more re-assurance. I went to my little stash of rescued screws (my bride says why do you keep all that stuff). I am sure many of you have heard the same. Low and behold, perfect fitting self tapping screw (3 were found), a bit of clear JB Weld and stronger than new. Thread the screw in all the way and into the bottom, back it off a bit, apply the epoxy to the whole groove and screw it back all the way in. Take your time, remember that the epoxy self levels a bit so tilt the groove to the sky to dry.

I had the same problem on the new to me. 1998. GL1500 interstate. I broke one off when I was installing a new battery. Instead of using J. B Weld, I use. super glue to put it back on. and then built it up around the base where I glued it back on by sprinkling baking soda on super glue This gave it more support and made it stronger. which turns very hard and you can file it down so it fits back into the rubber garments. Be careful when you sprinkle the baking soda on the super glue because it turns very hot even smokes I think either one of these ways of doing it will work very good. I've had to take the side cover off several times this spring and it's held so far.Put plenty of super glue around the area and sprinkle plenty of baking soda on it. And then just blow off the extra baking soda. I found this on youtube.
