oil in the coolant overflow

Post by billtaynor1 »

I just got a 94 gl1500, about a week ago. first gw ive ever owned, but wanted something i could ride all day on long trip and still feel like riding home once there. un like my other bike 45 min and i want to kick it over and call an uber. got a decent deal on this bike, looks good for its age, and seemed well cared for, was told that there was a coolant smell when it was really hot and you come to a stop, but he never seen anything leak from the bike, didnt seem to used any coolant. not knowing were or how to check the coolant on the test ride, it wasnt over heating, or leaking, i didnt, opps, should have. once home with it, i read the bible that came with the bike located the over flow dip stick, and checked it, and found what looks like windys frosty on the black zip tie looking dip stick. almost like petrolem jelly looking goo. it was late and i was in one of them moods were if i didnt walk away i would have kicked it over and called the scrap yard and ate 2k. no returns. facebook find. next day i get the other cover off and look in the rad, it was clean looking, had asain blue or honda coolant so it looks. but no oil, and was not low at all. checked the oil dip stick and looked in the fill hole really good, looking for maybe a cover up, for the oil was just changed in it, but seen nothing in the case even in places were he would have had to power wash it out it brake clean to get milk shake out, spotless,. took samples from the rad and over flow, didnt see anything floating on the top of the coolant of in it. it dont smoke, dont over heat, and dont leak anything on the ground, and only once did i smell anything coolant in the ride i took yesterday, about 250 miles, today pulled the coolant dip stick, and windys frosty is on it again. long shot someone said water pump, but after looking at the set up,and the weep hole dont look pluged up, highly unlikely, inless someone has seen it happen, everone is saying head gaskets. question is, i know its a bandaid, but blue devil head gasket sealant, has anyone had any luck with it on a bike fixing this issue, i have with cars, some never leaked again, but not sure on this kinda leak with this bike if it would stop this issue, at least till this fall when i can have the time to actually tare it all apart and change out everything. any ideas or ideas that dont require a crap load of time i dont have. thanks for any help on this, couldnt find anything on the site about this issue.

Sealers are rarely a good plan. Most do more harm than good. If the crankcase and the radiator are fine, I wouldn't worry about it, just yet. Clean out the overflow bottle, refill it, and just keep an eye on it.

i was thanking the same, i might unhook the over flow line from the rad and give a dawn dish soap bath, then hose it out really good and refill, see how long it takes to make more slime build up. the goal from day one was to ride this one for one season, let me get all the drops and hang of this way bigger bike, then sell it and my other bike and get a 18+ wing, just didnt want to spend 12k and then drop it, this one already took an adveture in the back yard, no harm done, and i got to pick it up not on a road way. love how they designed them, protected well

Sounds like you may have a blown head gasket. If the gasket deteriorates between an oil passage and a coolant passage you would get oil in the coolant and also coolant in the oil as well. Check the oil appearance too.

Could be as simple as the water pump. The pump shaft runs in both oil and coolant. Generally you'd expect seepage from the weep hole, but might be plugged.

Got an update?
You said no frosty looking in the radiator cap which is odd for your circumstance.
Check the line from the overflow to the radiator neck is actually connected & (somehow) routed to the crankcase.
Radiator draws off the bottom of the overflow drawing clean water.

the update for today is there is no update yet, been having to work to much to really get the time to take the thing apart and order the pump, i also want to take the front plastic cover off and use something to see it the weep hole is plugged, im thanking about shooting wd40 in the hole and it it leaks back out, then its not plugged and theres other issues, from what ive seen of this pump design, if the weep hole is not clogged up, there is little chance for it to be the cause, highly unlikely that it could do this with the weep hole open and two seals bad enough to let it happen. did ride it to work the other day, no issues at all with over heating, she stays under half on the ride and about middle sitting in traffice and the cooling fans come on like they should. oil is still looking free of coolant, i keep a eye on that for if i see a hint of it, she will get parked till fixed. i would hate to drop the 250 bucks on the pump + new coolant and not have the issue fixed, as for the the over flow hose, ill have to look into that when i get the thing apart and see were they are going, that would be really good news and a cheep fix, flush and fill and be done. ill keep you posted as to what the out come maybe.
