Dash Bulbs
Dash Bulbs
Anyone have a current link for dash bulb replacement? 1999 bulbs make it impossible to see the speedo at night. GWD write up talks about hot spots, cutting, resisters, I just want to replace mine with basic leds that fit, just a simple replacement. Thank you.

Re: Dash Bulbs
You can go to Partzilla.com and find your OEM bulb number then take that to a parts store and have them cross reference it to an led bulb

Re: Dash Bulbs
I just pulled my instrument panel out and, after checking that most of my bulbs were burned out, took one of them to Auto Zone and matched up LED replacements, blue for High Beam and panel illumination, Amber for OD and Side Stand lights, Red for Oil. I have a 92 Interstate so, I don't have Cruise, Low Fuel, or Reverse lights. I am happy with how my instrument panel looks now.

Re: Dash Bulbs
I tried blue LEDs for my dash illumination originally, but quickly realized that anything red on the dashboard (i.e. fuel warning zone, tach red zone) was completely invisible with the blue LEDs. It also made it much harder to read the odometer and trip odometer. I switched them out for white LEDs, which was perfect.Charlie1Horse wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 9:24 pm I just pulled my instrument panel out and, after checking that most of my bulbs were burned out, took one of them to Auto Zone and matched up LED replacements, blue for High Beam and panel illumination, Amber for OD and Side Stand lights, Red for Oil. WA, can you show me the style of led? Or a link to buy them? Thank you.WingAdmin wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:20 amI tried blue LEDs for my dash illumination originally, but quickly realized that anything red on the dashboard (i.e. fuel warning zone, tach red zone) was completely invisible with the blue LEDs. Re: Dash Bulbs
That type of bulb doesn't exist, that's why I've been asking, I'll just put more dull bulbs back in it.WingAdmin wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 1:24 pmAll of those details are on this page: How to replace your dash lights with LEDsMrWheelie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 11:14 amWA, can you show me the style of led? They come up for me using Scott's links, no problem.

Even have 3 different color temps of white.

Re: Dash Bulbs
I also have white gauges if that matters with the blue.

Re: Dash Bulbs
Yeah, you may have an issue with the blue or even any LED lights. I tried a wing with those awful white gauges and day or night had a horrible glaring reflection off the windscreen. I know you said you wanted simple, and even if you use the bulbs Scott mentioned, he had to do some modifications to get them to look right. I would be cautious about any bulb being too bright. Adding a dimming circuit so I could at least try to tone down things would be something I would do, apart from replacing those gauge faces. Seems like every car has had that since forever, but Honda couldn't be bothered to include it on their top-of-the-line bike.
As to colors and such, maybe first try lighting up the gauges at night with a small multi-color flash light to see how they look with the different color lights. With the white faces, maybe you might be better off with red bulbs as that preserves night vision. Just a guess. LEDs come in so many colors now, some are even adjustable.

Re: Dash Bulbs
I'd like to get it right with one try. I'll probably order red and look at them, if that doesn't work I have white, if that's too bright I'll go back incandescent.

Re: Dash Bulbs
That's why I mentioned just pointing a colored flashlight at them to see the effects. Like Scott mentioned some of the colored portions became hard to see under the blue light. As I recall the white faces have just black numbers and some red graphics?
Oh, I just looked at a photo, the needles look to be red or orangeish. That might be a problem with red lighting. Are some of the numbers blue or grey? Like I said, maybe see what they look like with different colored light before you tear everything apart and go through the trouble of swapping bulbs. I have a little battery light I got for a couple of bucks at Home Depot that does something like 6 colors that would be perfect for this.
