'99 Cornering/Driving Light Harness

Post by MaineStreet »

1999 GL1500. I had no driving lights, but the lenses and reflectors are on the front lower cowling. I thought the bulbs needed replacing, so I took the plastics off and found that there was no wiring harness or socket for a bulb (no wonder I didn't have any lights down there). I can order the harness and socket from Partzilla, but want to make sure I understand where the harness plugs into on the bike-side. I am assuming that the two pronged harness in this picture is where they will plug into, correct?

Were these add-ons? I am surprised that the sockets were not there. Also, the side front fairing reflectors/lights can accept a light socket, but there is no harness there either. Again, an add-on? Finally, unlike the drive lights, there is no harness connection near the fairing reflector/light. Does that splice in somewhere? Same wires as drive lights?

Thanks

Also, anyone know if these sockets are available for other vehicles?

Bèen a while since I had my bike apart in the front, but I am pretty sure that is the plug for the cornering light. It is not a driving light. The only time that light comes on is when the signal light on that side is on. You could test for power at that plug when the signal light is on to see if you have power there.
I believe some people have modified the cornering lights and converted them to driving lights.

My understanding after reading some is the up to 1998(?), the lights were cornering lights and only came on with the directional. In 1999 and 2000, both lights remained on all the time, so are driving lights. Some folks modified the older cornering lights to be driving lights.

Another installment of mostly useless info from the internet...

Cyclemax has kits for those and a few other places where stock is just a reflector, like the trunk and saddlebag sides. They just plug in, but often the wire they plug into is zip tied out of the way if not used.

Out of stock at the moment, but they usually have them. Maybe call for an ETA.

Never seen anyone put in just the lenses for cornering lights. They have a relay for each side to get the cornering effect. Plug and play kit, and if you go with LEDs you can cut one wire to the relay and they will stay on all the time. Don't do this with the stock incandescent bulbs as they will melt things.
A few options.
