GL1500 - rust on exhaust shield

Post by jfairman »

Does anyone have product guidance for paint to inhibit rusting on the exhaust shields? My '96 has had small rust spots along the bottom edge of the shield for several years. Having removed the shield to replace the cable controlling the foot warmer vents, I figure it's a good time to treat the rusty spots to prevent further damage. I'm not overly worried about color matching at this point, so am thinking about just doing some masked-off spot treatment to the rusty spots. I expect that it'll be appropriate to prep the rusty areas with sanding to get a clean surface, then .. unsure of what's the best product to use.

Given that this is a high temperature area, I wonder if a traditional rust "reformer" rattle can product will provide lasting protection. Photo of my exhaust shield below.

Thank you in advance to anyone who has personal experience having used a product to prevent / stop rust on a high temperature surface like this!

I took my shields off to replace them because they were rusted really bad and found others (later model) on ebay. I took them to someone that does powder coating. He matched the colors pretty close, sand blasted them, powder coated them. Now they look real nice and cost me about $100.00 for his service. The powder coat is baked on so it is good for high temperatures.
