Backrest

Post by Jmicester24 »

Hi folks!

Quick background info, When I bought my Goldwing, the man I got it from mentioned he bought an aftermarket seat that sat up a bit higher. He was a tall guy about 6'3. I am not 6'3 and found myself having to stand up at stop lights for my feet to touch the ground.
Recently, I bought a used seat so I can have my feet touch the ground while sitting at a light. While I am enjoying my new seat, I miss my backrest. I searched the net, but a backrest alone is quite pricey! Has any one made there own backrest for their 1500? If so, I would love to know what you did.
Also is there anyway to use my old seats backrest for my new seat??
I attached photos of both seats below. One one photo you can see some bolts in the bottom of my old seat. Are those to hold the backrest??

I would have a look at Utopia. They have backrests that might work with that seat, and they're not unreasonably priced.

I just checked the site. Those seem to be almost $300.
Are there any places that sell a pre owned backrest?

I checked. They all seem to be in the 200-300 dollar range. I shocked that a used backrest would be almost the same price as a new one!

Keep watching ebay. Be patient. Something will come available for a better price. Until then put something in the back seat to lean on.

I think you should be able to use the old backrest.
See the thread just below this one about mounting instructions.

If you cant use the old one,, put the old seat n backrest on ebay and use the money from it toward a new one.

Also, if you save your search on ebay you can have the option to recieve an email whenever another seat is listed.

Not sure they are interested in shipping it. I have been thinking I should run out and grab this one for a couple weeks even though I didn't know I even wanted one.

Worth a try. Shipping is stupid these days though.

Wish we lived closer together.
I put a Markland back rest on our 98 Wing in 99. The Mrs did not like the mounting bars hitting her legs. Mounting bars go on outside of seat and bolt on at passenger hand rails. So about a month later I replaced it with an Utopia. She is happier and the Markland has been wrapped in plastic hanging in garage since. I have taken it down a few times over the years to check for rust & to look at cover material, all is still as good as new. I didn't like the washers that came with it so I replaced them with stainless steel washers. The cover is NOT all black, it is 2 tone like the 98 seat.
Heck for $50 it is yours but the shipping would probably kill you due to the size of box to get the bar in. That's why I said wished we lived closer, I would deliver.
If not for you maybe someone else could use ? Take Care. John K
