Upper Fairing vent air flow

Post by orthoDaniel »

Hey, my 1993 Interstate is missing the levers the you can flip up and down near the side mirrors. I assume these are vent controls.

How much air flow should I be getting at the vents near my hands? Do the levers actuate a blockage to airflow or re-route the air?

It’s damn hot on top and I’m getting buffeting, so I think this might be the issue? But as far as I can tell, it the vents are open.

The levers you are missing are for the adjustable windshield. I don't believe the interstate had an adjustable windshield. That is why you don't have levers there.

You need to adjust your Firecreek windscreen. With the right height and angle, you should be able to get plenty of ventilation.

Those vents get the air from an intake just below the headlight. They are always open unless you close the little doors on the vent face. You will not get much air from those little vents. As stated, the levers were for adjusting the windshield.

If you want more air up high and don't have a vent in the windshield you can purchase one and try the DIY instructions for cutting out the windshield and installing the vent. That vent in our picture doesn't get much air from the front intake so ou need the windshield vent. Those levers by the mirrors are only on the Aspencade and the SE for adjusting the height of the windshield.

Thanks guys, that answers my questions. I’ll look into changing the angle, didn’t know I could do that! I’m also thinking of 3d printing a duct that slides in between the two pieces of the windshield hopefully that works and gets air flow.

Another option you will see a lot of are Baker Built Airwings.

Rambozo, my bike came with a pair of baker wings on the side. I am looking at finding some of the mirror wings.
After adjusting the height internally and with the quick adjusters, I still couldn't get rid of the buffeting that I experience at about 75 miles an hour. I also don't think I can change the angle either. .
I will get working on creating a middle vent this weekend, hopefully it helps with the buffeting.
