muffler replacement
Hey everyone,
Finally getting to some long overdue maintenance. It is bad when maintenance has to wait until you can't stand a noisy bike anymore. Anyone I agree they needed replacement lol?
Anyway, of course the new mufflers don't come with the end of the tailpipe (separate piece that is no longer available). I am having a hard time getting the 8mm bolts off the old pipes. Any secret other than just keeping using WD40 or something else to break them free?

Re: muffler replacement
You could try heating the bolts with a torch and using another product, like Kroil or PB blaster. I never have luck with WD-40 as a penetraring lubricant. Also, try tightening to break the rust and then back.out. i soak, wait, repeat with Kroil. Do that for a few hours. Smack the boltheads with a hammer and punch to break the rust bond (being careful not overdo it). If that doesnt work, you could grind the bolt heads off and use new, stainless bolts on the new pipes. Clean up the ends with 0000 steel wool the best you can.

Re: muffler replacement
Thanks for the ideas everyone. I tried a few things including some Deep Creep I remember I had. I believe I got that idea from here when I was working on something else. I have got two off so far but the the other are really stuck. I did tap them with the hammer as well as trying to tighten a bit and then reverse. They are so tight the socket is just slipping. I was going to try vice grips next. Breaking the bolts is an option as I already broke the first one anyway. I just have to see about getting new ones.
Also an option is buying new ones which I just may end up doing. I bought the mufflers from Partzilla and the end were not available so I thought they weren't available at all. I am glad to see at least I have options.

Damn. I just I wished I knew about those before. Someone on here posted a link for Partzilla when I was looking for mufflers which I have since bought. Now I only need the end tips.

Have you looked at Black Widow Exhaust ? They have the x pipe and different length muffler systems( different sound levels ) for 1500 Wings. From United Kingdom but there are some distributors in the states. Take Care. John K

Re: muffler replacement
I let the bolts soak in Deep Creek overnight and this morning using vice grips I got the remaining bolts out and I even got one tail piece separated. The second one is being a little more difficult so I have soaked the entire edge in Deep Creep and will let it sit for the day.
Thanks for the suggestion Jon, but as I said I already have purchased mufflers from Partzilla. I just need the tailpieces if I can find them. I found once side in Singapore, but haven't come across the other side yet. I'll probably just have to really clean it as best I can and go ahead with it.

Glad to hear it working out ok. There is another ebay seller Pinwheel? Sometimes I look at the prices and they seem high for parts in not greatest conditions. Maybe this is just what the market has them at.

Re: muffler replacement
Well I finally got the bolts out and got the tail pieces off. Had to use a rubber ballet and and a bar through the end of the tail piece to knock the muffler free. Now of course I can't get the tail pieces onto the new mufflers. My guess is there is so much rust build up on the inside plates that strengthen the tail piece where it connects to the muffler where the bolts go through. I will keep looking for new tail pieces but in the meantime I might have to use a grinding wheel to smoothen out the plates.

Re: muffler replacement
So I got the tail pieces back on finally with a lot of effort. I should have paid attention to this when I took them off, but when the muffler goes back on to connect to the chamber exhaust, is the muffler supposed to go over the gasket and then clamp down or does it just abut up against the gasket. It seems the prior is correct because I the hanging bolt does not line up, but the opening on the muffler is not wide enough to fit over the gasket. Maybe I am supposed to spread them but I want to make sure.

Re: muffler replacement
Well I maybe answered part of my question. I tried the other side and it seems it definitely has to go over the gasket. I got it pushed a long way but I am still about an 8th of a inch to line up with the bolt. Onward and upward I guess..

Re: muffler replacement
I glad you are making some head way with your exhaust. What a pain. Sometimes I start a job and have to quit as it is kicking my butt. I usually wake up in the middle of the night and go out to try whatever I thought about that woke me up. I bet my neighbors love me out in the garage with all the lights on. At least I don't turn the stereo on until 7 am. No complaints in past 30 plus years so I must be doing something right. Again have fun, walk away when you get stuck, better then tearing up parts or your skin. Take Care John K

Re: muffler replacement
Well I got back to this last night and I still can't get the damn thing on. I tried getting it on with no success. Then I thought maybe if I remove the gasket from the exhaust chamber and then try tap it inside the muffler it might slide on better. Nope.....the gasket seems to be seized to the exhaust chamber so I can't remove it. I then tried to pry the tabs open wider so it might slide on further. Still no go.

Re: muffler replacement
Check your local auto parts store for an exhaust pipe expander, and put it in the muffler intake and tighten it up to expand the pipe a little and then it should slide on. The expander slides into the pope and then you tighten it with a wrench or ratchet and socket. You might even try heating it with the expander in place and then tighten more. I have used this procedure before.

Re: muffler replacement
Thanks for the suggestion.
One thing I found out tonight that may be an issue is that the gasket seems to be bunched up in one place. This could be the spot where it is having problems. I have ordered a new one and it should be here on Tuesday.

Re: muffler replacement
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have days when you try to fix your bike and it all goes smooth sailing. Main I would love that. So looking at https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda ... se/muffler I ordered part #26 on the diagram (honda part number 18391-MAM-000). I finally got around today to looking at it again and found out the gasket is way too small. While the old one fits over the pipe on the exhaust chamber, this one is small enough that I could get it to fit inside the pipe on the exhaust chamber.
Is this why I am having such a hard time, because the gasket is supposed to be on the inside?

Okay I see what happened. I order the wrong part. I was on the wrong side of the exhaust chamber.

Re: muffler replacement
Hi everyone,
Well it was a real struggle but I finally got the second muffler back on. There is so little room to play with. I wish they would make the bolts a little longer for the clamps. Trying to hold it squished and trying to thread a bolt at the same time is quite difficult. I think what compounded my problem is I have a trailer hitch, so I can't take the hanging bolt out completely, which means the muffler cannot come flush with where the bolt comes thru. This is probably just enough to make it not want to get past the bolt. I kept working on it till it was real close, and then I risked the chance of wrecking the bolt but pushed on it from the side with a heavy screw driver. This was enough to squeeze it through the hanger on the muffler. Thanks again for everyone's help. Bike is purring like a kitten again.
